STATEMENT . . .
i will not explain the inner workings of me nor
my work. i do not profess that the secrets to the
universe or life are known to me and can be found in my work
(note: nor do i deny it) and i will not impress you with my
grasp of the language arts since it is not my chosen primary
means of communication. i feel that a written
statement about the visually communicated ideas and thoughts or
individual visual interpretations of the picture maker just goes against the
fundamental concept of a picture-based form of communication.
translation never works like the original format.
therefore,
while it may at first seem a little defiant or perhaps
uncooperative of me
to do so and at the risk of sabotaging my relationship with
you, the viewer, i'm going to
leave it to my work to convey my statement of it. my
work is not grounded in a single idea that i want to pin it
to...nor do i feel it will
necessarily transfer well into a written or even spoken
format, for that matter...pictures make visual statements
best.
i am glad to share with you some
of the thoughts i had at the time i was making the visual
image that resulted...but then...it's really best said by the
picture that resulted from those thoughts and ideas,
anyway. if your curiosity is on the matter of the
technical execution of the picture, it's material attributes,
or archival qualities, i am happy to give you every detail you
desire on those aspects...i understand the nature of these
queries and they, of course, are best conveyed in a spoken/
written format, indeed.
so...look at the pictures. my statement
sincerely lies within them. i hope you don't take any offense that i challenge you to
roll up your sleeves and seek it out of the work.
surely you can agree that's a little bit of the point of
looking at the picture anyway...a picture or any form of
visual representation is making it's statement to you, the
viewer, when you view it. if you don't hear it, you
might not really be looking into it but rather just at
it.
i could be wrong...but then...this is my statement, that's what i have to write about my work in the form of an
artist's statement, and that's official. if the purpose
behind you being here at this moment has anything to do with
my work, you didn't come to read about it anyway...you came to see
it, i imagine. it is at this point that i realize my
written statement could have simply read, "artist's
statement: (see pictures)". but i think i will
leave the whole of it anyway...it will give the background on
how i arrived at it when my written statement becomes just
simply that.
PROCESSES
. . .

i
primarily produce b&w and color prints these days...but i also
sometimes produce woodblock prints, works in paint, and various
manifestations of mixed media. in the context of my photographic
combine works, my process is as such...
i
work first through the camera lens, capturing calculated indirect and direct
visual cues, forms, shapes, tones, and textures to
use as my raw palette, merging them deliberately in pursuit of a resulting
visual portrayal that is something of a sum of the individual images it is
assembled from, the subtleties in how each image is captured, represented, and
incorporated, and the portrayal of the visual relationships tying them together
within a resulting work in print, laying down carbon-based pigments on cotton rag papers.
MORE
DETAIL : PRINT PERMANENCE . . .
my prints
are created using archival carbon-based UltraChrome K3 pigmented (the raw material of paint)
inks laid down on archival, non-acidic, pH buffered, specially coated 100%cotton rag papers for
permanence ratings of 100 to several hundred years before the print begins to
visibly age (www.wilhelm-research.com),
depending on environment and the specific paper finish. if you have
questions about a particular print, just
ask.

whatever it is that you do, you work hard for the compensation and

going to make money for someone. while i'm certainly flattered if you
see something you'd like to use, i'd really just like to know...and
